Mindle vs Evernote: what happens to ten years of notes?
Evernote is not the app it was in 2022, and neither the good nor the bad parts are where people think.
If you are leaving Evernote, leave with your data: it still exports everything to ENEX or HTML from the desktop app, free plan included, and it still works offline. What it does not do is organize anything for you. Notebooks and tags are yours to maintain, and its AI answers questions rather than filing notes. Mindle groups everything you capture into concepts as it arrives, which is the part that decides whether a decade of notes is an archive or a graveyard.
Evernote's free plan is capped at 50 notes, 1 notebook and 1 device, and its notebooks and tags are rationed by plan. Mindle groups notes into concepts automatically, so nothing is filed by hand.

From something you clipped in 2019: retention beats acquisition once churn passes 4%. A 2024 voice memo restated it as an onboarding problem, and the Q3 plan finally acted on it.
A clipping from 2019 and a plan from 2026 are the same argument. Seven years and four notebooks apart.

Evernote is not the app you remember, in both directions
Most Evernote comparisons are years out of date, so let's fix that first. Evernote today transcribes audio notes automatically, has embeddings-based semantic search rolling out, ships an official MCP server so AI agents can read and create notes, and states plainly in its policy that it does not train models on your content. Any page telling you Evernote is a dumb filing cabinet is selling you something.
What also changed: the free plan is capped at 50 notes, one notebook and one device; the old Personal and Professional plans were retired in 2026 and replaced by Starter and Advanced at higher prices; and the company that owns it has been reshaping the product since 2023. That combination. Still capable, but more expensive and more restricted. Is why people are looking.
AI at query time versus organization at capture time
Evernote's AI works when you ask it something. You can search semantically, ask the assistant a question, or tell it to move a note into a notebook you already made. That is genuinely useful, and it is also the whole shape of it: nothing happens to a note unless you act on it.
Mindle's grouping happens because you saved something. Notes cluster into concepts by meaning on arrival, the concept graph is derived from those clusters, and you never pick a destination, keep a label consistent, or run a cleanup pass later. After ten years of capture, the difference is not how well you can search. It is whether the structure exists at all when you finally go looking.
Where Evernote is straightforwardly better
Evernote lets you leave with your data. Export to ENEX or HTML works from the desktop app, on the free plan too, in batches of up to 100 notes or whole notebooks. Mindle has no export path at all yet. That is a real reason to keep an Evernote account around, and a fair thing to hold against us.
It also works offline: the desktop app keeps a full local database, and mobile can pin offline notebooks. Mindle needs a connection. On agents the two now match: both ship an MCP server, so Claude or ChatGPT can read and create notes in either account, though Evernote gates its behind a paid plan and Mindle does not. Add the web clipper, a decade of integrations, and OCR that reads handwriting inside images, and there is a lot here Mindle does not attempt.
- Full export to ENEX or HTML, free plan included: Mindle has none
- Offline on desktop with a local database: Mindle needs the network
- A decade of third-party integrations and a web clipper: Mindle has neither
- Web clipper and OCR over handwriting, built up over a decade
What Mindle does differently
Nothing to file, nothing to label, no plan-rationed structure: concepts form from what you save, so the organization scales with the pile instead of collapsing under it. A daily feed anchors everything to the day it arrived, voice notes are transcribed on capture, and files and images sit alongside your text rather than in a separate archive.
Mindle does not train AI models on your notes, and it does not cap how many notes you can keep by plan tier. What it will not give you is a local copy, an offline mode, or an agent connection: those are Evernote's today.
Switching honestly
Do the export first, whatever you decide. Evernote's ENEX export is the only clean copy of your archive, it only runs from the desktop app, and it caps at 100 notes per batch. Plan an afternoon for a big account, and keep the file.
Then know the limit on our side: Mindle has no bulk importer, so an ENEX archive cannot be poured in. Files go one at a time (PDF, DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, TXT, MD). The realistic move is not migrating a decade of notes. It is starting your next decade somewhere that files itself, and keeping the ENEX archive as your history.
Which should you choose?
Choose Evernote if…
- You need to be able to export everything, on demand
- You work offline often
- You want an AI agent connected to your notes today
- You rely on the web clipper or a long tail of integrations
Choose Mindle if…
- Your notebooks stopped reflecting how you think years ago
- You want structure without maintaining it
- You don't want note counts and notebooks rationed by plan
- You capture in voice and text, in Spanish as well as English
Questions
Is Mindle a good Evernote alternative?
For organization and recall, yes: Mindle groups notes into concepts automatically, with no manual filing, and its free plan gives you an allowance that renews every month rather than a standing cap of 50 notes. If you need export or offline access, Evernote is still ahead. Those are real gaps on our side. On connecting an AI agent over MCP the two now match, except that Evernote asks for a paid plan and Mindle does not.
Can I import my Evernote ENEX export into Mindle?
Not today. Mindle has no bulk importer; files go in one at a time. Export from Evernote anyway. It is the only clean copy of your archive, and treat Mindle as where new capture goes.
Does Evernote still have a usable free plan?
Barely, for note-taking: the free plan is limited to 50 notes, one notebook and one device, though export is still available to free users. Its paid Starter and Advanced plans replaced the old Personal and Professional tiers in 2026.
Does Evernote have AI now?
Yes, and it is worth being accurate about it: automatic audio transcription, an AI assistant, AI note cleanup, and embeddings-based semantic search rolling out to paid users. What it does not do is organize your notes for you without being asked.
Does either app train AI on my notes?
Neither. Mindle does not train AI models on your data, and Evernote's privacy policy states it will not use your AI inputs or outputs to train its models unless you tell it to, and does not permit third parties to do so.
Can I use Mindle offline like Evernote's desktop app?
No. Evernote's desktop app keeps a full local database and works without a connection; Mindle is a cloud app with no offline mode. If you write on planes or trains, that difference matters.
